How do fan-sub groups determine the resolution that the animation was mastered in? Do they just guess or is there software that can give a better approximation?

We use meme magic to determine the resolution :^)

There are scripts that downscale (using debicubic/debilinear) to a wide range of resolutions and compare the differences to the original. The production res is where the difference is minimum.

Obviously you need to then check the results by eye to make sure you're using the right resize filter/params. FUCK THE 255 CHAR LIMIT.
