Shinonome Jinpachi had retired as a detective with the Kyoto police, but persuades his former boss to hire him back as a part-time commission to pass on the investigative techniques of his generation. He often disappears into the town to pick up the gossip going around, and his years of experience have given him a broad information network ranging from high school girls to underworld bosses. In spite of his appearance, his detective skills are as sharp as ever. His late wife told him he should remarry after she died, and to fulfil her wishes he is now marriage hunting.

Natsuki Asako is an inspector newly appointed to the First Division as a team leader. Although she has little actual investigation experience, in her 30 years with the police she has worked in every department and built up her own network of internal connections. She uses her unfamiliarity with her new role as a pretext to ignore traditional conventions and hierarchical relationships and get her own way.

Although their methods are polar opposites and their personalities may clash, when Asako’s "royal road" investigations overlap with Shinonome’s side street ones the truth of any incident will surely emerge.
