Bleach (ブリーチ, Burīchi?, Romanized as BLEACH in Japan) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated
by Noriaki "Tite" Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of
a Soul Reaper (死神, Shinigami?, literally, "Death God")
—a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki.
His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil
spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.

Bleach has been serialized in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump since August 2001,
and has been collected into 48 tankōbon volumes as of December 2010[update]. Since its publication,
Bleach has spawned a media franchise that includes an ongoing animated television
series that is produced by Studio Pierrot in Japan, two original video animations, four animated feature films,
seven rock musicals, and numerous video games,
as well as many types of Bleach-related merchandise.

One hundred and ten years before the start of the series, then–fifth division captain Shinji Hirako is approached by
then–fifth division lieutenant, Sōsuke Aizen, about preparations for the new captain of 12th division.
While she and Kisuke Urahara spar in their private training area, Yoruichi Shihōin tells him that she has recommended
him for the position of 12th Division Captain. Soi Fon, immediately distrusting Urahara because of what she has seen of his person
and his dwelling, follows him around town to prove to Yoruichi that he is not worthy of the responsibility required for the new position.
Yoruichi, however, after seeing Soi Fon's proof on paper, disregards it as a love letter. Urahara and a group of Soul Reapers
were tailing a group of deserters who had abandoned the Seireitei of their own admonition and sent to stop them.
After they are taken care of, Urahara passes the qualification exam and shows up to the captain's meeting.
