The anime is based upon the manga written and illustrated by Cocoa Fujiwara, The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies was first published in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker magazine in September 2013. This manga then became UNFINISHED due to author Fujiwara's death in March 2015.
