Subtitles were yellow precisely because there were originally no borders and shadows. Yellow subtitles with a massive border and shadow is somewhat ironic.

You can't deny that these are highly legible and easy to read and isn't that the purpose of subtitles? If you can't read them then they're pretty useless.
