Release

A complete Dual Audio release encoded in AV1 and OPUS for optimum size and quality. Files are named to support media servers like Plex using TVDB metadata.

Encoding Details:

This release was encoded with our very own Normal-Boost encoding setup. As such, the CPU preset and CRF values were selected per scene based on an initial measurement of quality from the first pass and thus the two values listed in the command below are inaccurate. For the most demanding scenes, a minimum of preset 2 and CRF 18 was used. Conversely, the simplest scenes would have a preset of 4 and CRF 40. However, most normal scenes are weighted towards CRF 28. This allows for smaller file sizes and improved quality in select scenes. For more details, experimental data, and other wild conjectures, we invite you to join us in the Discord server.

Ideally, had the requester not insisted on higher quality, we would have targeted a much smaller release as our initial measurement of S01E01 yielded a SSIMULACRA 2 score of ~87 whereas any value from 80-85 would have been acceptable, especially so for an older show lacking sharp details. We also admittedly compromised on their insistence on FLAC or very high bitrate audio. We can no longer contact them but we hope they find this release acceptable.

This project is a production with the goal of the smallest video size with moderate subjective compromises to image quality. This is not the hallmark of AV1, but close enough. This release should only contain changes to the video stream and audio tracks. The subtitle and attachment tracks are usually copied from the noted sources. Timings are not adjusted except in cases of extreme delay as a result of mixing sources. - Sav1or

Comparisons

Coincidentally, we managed to match the bitrate of an existing HEVC release for S01E01 and have made some crude comparisons in the above header and below. Most comparisons were chosen specifically to showcase the most challenging scenes for AV1. It is no secret that AV1 shines best at lower bitrates but pales in comparison at the highest fidelity in regards to texture. However, recent changes within SVT-AV1-PSY have given us the ability to retain more textures than previously possible at near or lower bitrates.
