would you look at the time

Role Staff

Typesetting Rurōni, dedsec

Figured I should wrap this up before something else comes up and I go from notded to just ded. It's insane how easy it is to stall. At least it was faster than last time!

The technical stuff about this release remains largely similar to the first season. Heavily edited Crunchyroll subs over JPBD encode. Honorifics track for those who prefer it.

Huge thanks to Rurōni for taking over all the typesetting work and overhauling almost every sign and even adding some borderline unreasonable ones at my request. Thanks to Shei98 for sharing the BDMVs, and everyone else who reported errors or helped out with this release in any capacity. And thank you, my specialz, for sailing the high seas with us!

As always, the entire project is on GitHub. Feel free to use whatever you want from this release. Please report any issues you find on Discord and leave feedback in the comments, good or bad!

we do a little stalling

Role Staff
Translation Crunchyroll (Dialogue), dedsec (Songs)

Quality Control Dragoonstorm01 (Script), FullMetal (Release)

About the release:

  • The source is sharp. Perhaps a little too sharp. To the point where a perfectly normal line randomly gets darker or aliased or haloed. It's inconsistent and annoys the fuck out of me. I selectively applied anti-aliasing only over parts that were too sharp to soften them just enough so they look a bit more consistent. The rest is the usual masked denoising, debanding, graining, etc.

  • I decided to include the 2.0 channel audio track as well because I was told that studio downmixed audio is better than downmixing it during playback.

  • Moving to the subtitles, boy this movie was a piece of work. All I'll say is there's a layer of depth you're missing out on with the official subs. I'm glad I didn't wait until the series was done because this cleared up a lot of my doubts around how certain terminology should be handled, which is one of the reasons why it was stalled for so long in the first place.

  • Named. Chapters.

If you're someone who has never watched Jujutsu Kaisen, you can still watch this movie. After that, I'd suggest you wait a bit longer for our Season 1 release. Then re-watch this when you have more context. Seriously, this movie keeps getting better with context. Especially after the events of the upcoming season. Manga readers know what I'm talking about!

As always, the entire project is on GitHub. Feel free to use whatever you want from this release. There's an alternate honorifics track included, tagged as enm, for those who prefer it. Please do leave feedback in the comments, good or bad!

— dedsec, 2020

Role Staff
Translation Crunchyroll, Netflix, Viz Media, dedsec (Songs)
Encoding, Editing, Timing dedsec
Typesetting Asahi-Anime Land, StormFS, dedsec
Quality Control Dragoonstorm01, dedsec

About the release:

  • Video processing involves rescaling, anti-aliasing, dehaloing, denoising, debanding, and graining. There's some scene filtering and zoning in between, and even some custom masking. The scripts are on GitHub for those interested.

  • Audio tracks for the first cour have been slightly modified by shifting the ending song back by a couple hundred milliseconds because it was not perfectly in sync with the video. Given how iconic that ED is, I didn't want to make any compromises with the lyrics timing. Nothing else out of the ordinary.

  • Subtitles are based on Crunchyroll's translation. It was checked against the manga and the subs from Netflix, which went a long way in fixing numerous errors in the script. A lot of the complex typesetting is taken from Asahi-Anime Land and StormFS releases and modified for an English release. There's an alternate honorifics track included, tagged as enm, for those who prefer it.

I thought this would never end, but here we are. Across the ten or so times that I must have watched this by now, I've only come to like it more with every rewatch. I just hope that you guys like it at least half as much! Thanks to Lupin the Nerd and Shei98 for sharing the BDMVs, and everyone who reported errors or helped out with this release in any capacity.

See y'all for season 2 next week!
