Description

please download the v2 instead of this. v2

This short film has no dialogue, so no subtitles required. Encoded from 2160p ProRes4444 XQ HDR Master so no filtering. EAC3 Atmos track is taken from NF rip and cut to match Master.

My first time working with a "master" and HDR, so if I've made mistakes please tell me

Tested with: MPC-HC+madVR, MPV, Plex Kodi add-on Android TV(Nvidia Shield), Plex for Android TV, Plex for Roku/Roku TV. All appeared fine.

Glad to see somebody else is also interested in encoding this :)

A few things I noticed:

  • Given that the complete uncompressed 16-bit VDM is also provided, technically it's preferable to directly encode from that, as opposed to encode from a lossy source;
  • There is no HDR metadata? For static hdr10 metadata you can use --master-display and --max-cll, and these two will automatically enable --hdr10. Note that Netflix also provided dynamic, per-scene Dolby Vision metadata in a xml file, but I didn't want to bother with it since I don't know how well this is supported at the moment by x265 and various video players.
  • Be aware that UHD standards now specify subsampled chroma planes should be aligned to "top left", instead of "left" as in FHD Blu-rays. Therefore you need to shift the chroma planes both to the right and down by half a pixel when downsampling from yuv444 to yuv420, and then use --chromaloc 2 instead of 0.

@LoliHouse Thanks. I'll see if I can try to work all of that into a v2 for an overnight encode
