The BDMV is overall not good. Not good at all. Whilst the noise and banding isn't too big of a hassle, the lineart is atrocious. This is not an artifact like aliasing or ringing, however. The lineart itself is just bad.
Filtering includes descaling to 720p, weak denoising, using a specific way of aliasing (more on that in a bit), adaptive debanding and then graining. Adaptive debanding was done based on overall brightness of a frame, with brighter areas being debanded less and darker areas being debanded stronger. I also scenefiltered a deband on two cuts.
For AAing, I've tried multiple things. Obviously, I tried just AAing as per usual, maybe with a couple of additional cycles. This worked, however it resulted in a lot of lines being completely warped. After trying a couple of similar things to that, I ended up trying to think out of the box with filter choices. Stuff like throwing away half the fields, interpolating them, and masking the lineart, so I can apply it to just that. This wasn't strong enough, and some shadows were botched.
Finally, I resulted in just using SangNom, although with some additional fuckery. What I ended up doing was transposing the clip, throwing SangNom with some repair over it, transposing it again, and then Nnedi3ing. The result is still far from perfect, and SangNom still warps a couple of lines, but this is the best result I've gotten so far. I'll probably end up testing some more stuff just to see what else I have to pull out of my hat, but I doubt I'll find the magical solution I'm hoping for. Oh well.
Requests are welcome, but I’ll probably just end up doing whatever looks fun to do.
