[Orphan] Majo demo Steady (LD)
Orphan presents the first English version of the 1986 ecchi sci-fi comedy, Majo demo Steady (My Steady Is a Witch). Encoded from a Japanese laserdisc by Macross2012. For more information, see the blog entry.
Majo demo Steady contains a lot of nudity (it's an ecchi comedy, right?). You have been warned... or alerted.
This release, and all Orphan releases, are available for direct download from IRC bot Orphan|Arutha in channels #nibl or #news on irc.rizon.net.
Update: in response to all the complaints, I've remixed the AC3 audio track to mono and created a patch to replace the existing AC3 audio track and delete the AAC audio track. It uses a 64b version of xdelta3, so if you are not a 64b system, you will need to download a modern 32b version from Github.
The resulting file should be [Orphan] Majo demo Steady v2 (LD) [5D2E064C].mkv. It is 100MB smaller.

The audio is only coming from the left side, on either audio track, despite both being labeled "stereo", and with multiple media players. Am I doing something wrong, or is it a problem with the file?
@hozjiwpoo4jt221 - You are correct. Macross2012's original raw was encoded that way. No idea why.
I re-encoded the file to be mono so it comes from both sides. Do you guys have an IRC channel?
All I did was
ffmpeg -i "[Orphan] Majo demo Steady (LD) [8702AF26].mkv" -map_channel 0.1.0 -c:v copy test.mkv
@archivisth It would have been nice to mention this in the torrent description and/or your blog post.
why dose it have 2 audio tracks did the stereo get separated during muxing/encoding? I made them left/right channles in audacity and it dose not seem to be any stereo movement. Mmmmm need to find another source it might not even have noticeable stereo in it.
Zippy DSMlee, I also made them stereo using Audacity, and there IS some slight stereo movement. noticeable in some songs where some instruments come from the left and others from the right, and in some dialogue where some is centered and others come from right or left. I also used handbrake to compress the file a bit... so now instead of 1Gb file with two mono left audio tracks, I have a 165Mb stereo file. :P I also cropped off a bit of the right edge of the video, because there was some sort of "bleed" going on there... :P
ericfromabeno you got better ears than me LOL. Right idea tho, good to know the base ieda was not wrong. The ac3 file I made was like 57mb at 192kbs, flac was nearly 256mb I think LOL.
Will there be a v2 for people that done encode themselves?
I would put up my re-encode, but Nyaa does not like to clutter the website with re-encodes of other people's encodes, because you end up with re-encodes of re-re-reencodes.... and there is quality loss at each step... My small file, for example, is small because it used an aggressive compression format... at full screen while it is playing, I don't notice any difference, but if you do a side-by-side comparison you can see small imperfections in my copy... but it's so much smaller that I am willing to live with it... I just can't share it... :(
In this case you'd have to delete this torrent and upload one with optional audio in raw acc/ac3/flac format(just add it to this torrents folder update the torrent, release new torrent,ect). MPC can easily play external sub and audio files. But moving forward you can always offer an simple optional fix and if under 2 GB or so you can offer the fix in as its own full video file. Options are not bad they give us something to work with till something better comes along.
I also don't see the harm in uploading a fix(extra audio) for it, its that or removing the torrent then doing a new one.
I agree. I think archivisth aka Orphan should try to fix and re-upload .... but maybe they are busy with other projects. ... It wasn't TOO hard to edit the audio tracks with Audacity, and recombine the new audio and the old video with mkvtoolinx. The extra step where I compressed the file with HandBrake doesn't technically need to be done, but I personally think a 1Gb file for a 44 minute 480p video is a bit excessive... Still, if archivist is unused to those different software, trying to figure them out could be frustrating...
There shouldn't be any re-encoding of the original video or audio. A simple mix-down to mono with ffmpeg fixes the issue, and quality loss is zero. A v2 would be great, as no one wants to listen to audio on one side for 40 minutes.
er you don't even need to remux it just set your player to mono output, if you are going for fast and dirty. BTW how hard is it to make a patch file? I might entertain the idea. Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism BDs has my attention right now I am mixing scripts to get op/eding in, got ep one done, it's mostly just timing the op/ens no real hard lifting for once.... I hate PGS......
I appreciate the suggestions. I am focused on getting an actual LD to encode, which will solve both the audio and the encoding issues. However, if the two audio tracks are not the same, as ericfromabeno suggests, then making a stereo version by converting one track to the format of the other and using both would make sense. I don't think players can handle AAC on one track and AC3 on the other.
