Project notes: Well, somebody wanted the raw PCM audio from To-Y, so I figured, what the hell.

Normally I convert all my captures to high-bitrate DVD (To-Y included), because it looks good, and I think its a reasonable compromise between size and quality. After all, you wouldn’t balk at ripping from a physical DVD, right? The only thing that would be better is a Blu-ray, but laserdiscs are not at a resolution to make that worth it.

I forget what DVD authoring software I was using when I was still using Windows, but by default it generated AC3 audio. Now that I’ve switched to Linux full-time I use DevedeNG, which does MP2 audio by default. PCM, which is uncompressed audio, is TECHNICALLY supported by the DVD specification, but not very well – some players will actually reject disks if they have PCM audio. DevedeNG does not have any option to generate a DVD with PCM audio. In fact, as near as I can tell, literally no Linux DVD authoring tools support that. I could get into weird command-line stuff, do demuxing and remuxing, but why? Just to generate something that won’t play IRL? No thanks.

And here’s the thing with To-Y: It is literally one of the rarest and most valuable laserdiscs that’s ever been made, which makes it extra endangered. I also love To-Y. So, in this one case, I am releasing the raw original uncut DV capture. Bon apetit.
